Lithuanian cuisine

  • Senoji Trobelė is a quaint little house in the middle of the city where dishes are prepared according to old Lithuanian traditions.

    What should you try?

  • Cepelinai or didžkukuliai are potato dumplings made from grated and riced potatoes and stuffed with ground meat, dry curd cheese or mushrooms.

  • Kibinai: are traditional pastries filled with mutton and onion.

  • Kvass: a drink made from fermented rye bread.

  • Deep fried rye bread: normally served with garlic and cheese. So bad - so good.

  • White salad: potato salad, but with more ingredients including carrots, peas, pickles and hard boiled eggs.

  • Cold beat soup: served with warm potatoes.

  • Siupinine: sausage soup, flavoured with paprika and tomatoes

  • Kugelis: a clay pot dish made with potatoes, bacon, milk, onions and eggs.

International cuisine

There are many bars are scattered around Vokiečių Street.

  • Kinza: Central Asian / Uzbeki cuisine. Best pilaf and mezes in town.

  • Benedikto Market: it’s a little bit outside the city centre but you will find 9 places to eat and 32 shops with all sorts of Lithuanian products and edible souvenirs at a non-touristy price.

  • Senatoriu pasazas: a historical mansion with two restaurants that cherish the farm-to-table concept.

  • Fabrikelis: a cute and cosy place that serves dishes made from seasonal produce.

  • Azerai: cheap kebabs and a controversial experience. Feels dodgy, tastes good.

  • Belmontas: Restaurant in a beautiful setting which used to be a mill.
